Imagine a company that makes the best of everything. Every product and service that they offer is the best in the market and all everyone wants is that brand and nothing else. Imagine the revenue that this company would be generating day in and day out!

Now you can pinch or shake yourself awake because all that the above scenario can be is a daydream. There is no such thing as a perfect business and, more importantly, it is impossible to get everyone to want the same products and services. The best part of shopping these days is that there is no shortage in choice. And this is both a good and bad thing for businesses because it means that there is always space for your business but the flip side is that if you do not understand your market you could completely miss out on your potential profits.

For any business, one of the main thing is to identify and then to tap into their target markets. Too many times businesses are hoping to get their hands on as many customers as they possibly can but what happens in this greedy bargain is that they end up losing focus of their target market and thus losing relevant customers.

The good thing about online businesses is that the Internet is able to lend enough technology so that we can really target the traffic that is coming to our sites. As we all know, the Internet is open to everyone and by that logic almost anyone could end up on your site. But does that mean that visitor is going to get you revenue? Not at all! So then what is the point of having that visitor on your site? At the end of the day, what really matter is your conversion rate and if your visitors are not getting your profits then you are not getting very far with your business.

Those business owners who believe that having high traffic coming to their site is the main thing are actually missing the point. Of course, if you are looking at the law of averages, then that means that the more visitors that come to your site, the higher the chances of them converting into a buyer. This is true only when the traffic to your site is relevant. For example, you could have a 100 un-targeted visitors coming to your site and perhaps only one might make a purchase from you. On the other hand, you might have 10 targeted visitors to your site and out of that 2 convert to buyers then the deal you are getting with targeted web traffic is still better.

The point is that working with untargeted traffic is a waste of time and money. You might be spending great amounts on advertising on the Net but if these ads are not placed in the spots where your target audience are looking then you are not going to benefit much from that. At the same time, the time and effort that you put into these ads that are not getting you focused results will eventually start eating into your revenues. Keep in mind that time does convert directly to money.

Another problem with getting untargeted traffic to your site is that those coming to your site might not actually be eligible to buy the products that you are offering. Instead, if you decide to focus on a certain section of the market that have, both, the interest and the financial capability to buy from you then the results you get back should be much more rewarding.

On the outset it might look like going after a big population is the best idea but you just have to do that for a little while to find out that the lack of focus in such a strategy is just not going to get you return of investments. Making a conscious effort to target the traffic that comes to your website is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that you get increased profits.
